2013 in Google Most Search

2013 in Google Search: Philippines’ top searches unveiled

‘Paul Walker’ most searched; ‘Typhoon Haiyan’ 2nd in global trending events

(Manila, Philippines, December 18, 2013) — Google Philippines released its annual year-end Zeitgeist, a collection of the top search queries by Filipinos on google.com.ph. Leading 2013’s top searches is Hollywood actor Paul Walker, who was killed in a car crash on November 30. Walker, 40, is best known for his role as law enforcement official Brian O’Conner in the The Fast and the Furious franchise.

The overall searches list is also dominated by much-anticipated smartphones launched this year, controversial celebrities, and a beauty pageant that crowned yet another Filipina, among others.

Walker, who attended his charity event for the Typhoon Yolanda victims before the tragic crash, also topped the local lists for most searched news, newsmaker, and people. The deaths of Glee actor Cory Monteith and former South African president Nelson Mandela also figured prominently in the lists.

This year’s news list shows that Pinoys remain avid followers of competitions. Miss Universe, FIBA Asia, UAAP Season 76, and Wimbledon all took spots alongside political events such as the mid-term elections in May, State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July, and the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel scam issue. Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan), one of the strongest typhoons to make landfall, makes it to the list as netizens ramp up searches for news and updates.

In food, juice recipes claimed the top spot in the most searched recipes list, followed by a string of desserts and meat recipes. International House of Pancakes (IHOP), which opened their first branch in the country early this year got the number one spot in the most searched restaurant list, overtaking other popular food choices equally brimming with customers such as J.CO Donuts and Vikings.

Other categories in this year’s local year-end Zeitgeist include local destinations, fashion brands, smartphones, apps, movies, music, TV shows, Korean personalities, dog breeds, and health and lifestyle.

In addition to showcasing what people were curious about in the Philippines, Google Zeitgeist tools also offer insight into which topics captured the world’s attention in 2013. Top search terms from over fifty countries appear on our Google Zeitgeist webpage, googlezeitgeist.com—from most-searched travel destinations in Brazil, to trending Australian celebrities, to most-searched Egyptian Olympians, to top tech gadgets in Japan and everything in between.

The Philippines also made a mark in the global search traffic with Typhoon Haiyan ranking second in the most trending event this year. This list is capped by Boston Marathon, which made the news in April due to bombings that killed three and injured close to 300.

To see more information about Google Zeitgeist across the globe, use interactive data visualizations and to watch the annual video, visit googlezeitgeist.com

“Zeitgeist is a tool in discovering the pulse of the people through searches made on Google. With the growing percentage of population going online, Zeitgeist becomes reflective of the issues and topics we’re interested in. This year’s lists speak a lot about our concern for national achievement and progress, while at the same time our curiosity in pop culture issues,” said Gail Tan, Google Philippines Country Communications Manager.

Zeitgeist Explained

Google reveals the Internet “Zeitgeist” (German for “the spirit of the times”) through an exploration of the billions of search queries we receive each year. In addition to the Year-end Zeitgeist, which highlights the top trends of 2013, we also have several tools that give insight into global, regional, past, and present search trends. Google Zeitgeist tools can never be used to identify individual users because we rely on anonymized, aggregated counts of how often certain search queries occur over time. These tools are available year-round for you to play with, explore, and learn from: www.google.com.ph/insights/search

What is the Google Year-End Zeitgeist?

clip_image002

What is the Google Year-End Zeitgeist?

“Zeitgeist” means “the spirit of the times.” At the end of each year, Google celebrates this spirit by revisiting the year’s top searches around the world. From most-searched travel destinations in Brazil, to trending Australian celebrities, to most-searched Egyptian Olympians, to top tech gadgets in Japan, and everything in between, these lists give us insight into the curiosities that captured the world’s attention in 2013.

This year, we’re launching the 13th annual Google Year-End Zeitgeist on google.com/zeitgeist. Our site showcases over 1,000 top-ten lists across pop culture, sports, music, politics, news, and more. It’s global, spanning over 70 countries. You can check out global search trends, compare terms using interactive data visualizations, and watch the annual Zeitgeist video.

How did you determine which terms were popular this year?

We created these lists and data visualizations using a combination of tools that provide insight into global, regional, past and present search trends in aggregate. Much of the data was informed by Google Trends, a publicly available tool that displays relative search volume across geographies, time periods and queries. We also used internal tools that allow us to do some more complex analysis, such as combining country data from across the European Union. We’ve also filtered out spam, irrelevant queries and repeated queries so our lists can best reflect the “spirit of the times.”

Google Trends lets you dive deep into what’s popular on the Internet — you can compare search data by time, location, and between queries. Google Trends also offers category filtering, top and rising searches, and geographic “heat maps”.

What categories do you have in Zeitgeist 2013?

Trending Searches: What was hot in 2013? The “trending” queries are the searches that had the highest amount of traffic over a sustained period in 2013 as compared to 2012.

Most Searched: What topped Google’s charts? The “most searched” queries are simply the most popular terms for 2013, ranked in order by volume of searches.

From what gadgets and gizmos were trending, to what styles were hot, to which athletes inspired us, Zeitgeist showcases what captured the world’s attention this year through the lens of Google Search.

Zeitgeist By the Numbers

● 72 countries represented worldwide, with 17 new this year including Bangladesh, Croatia, and Venezuela

● Zeitgeist site is available in 52 languages this year

● Over 1,000 top-ten lists, representing over 1.3 trillion searches done in 146 languages

● 2001: year we started doing Zeitgeist, we had only 14 lists limited to the US

Elabram employees for Haiyan/ Yolanda Victims

DSC09006

Elabram employees for Haiyan/ Yolanda Victims

Elabram employees shared their blessing for Typhoon Haiyan or Typhoon Yolanda victims in the Philippines and collected Php 52,000.00. The amount collected will be course through to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman Richard Gordon on December 9, 2013 at PRC Headquarter in Intramuros. The amount might be small compare with the big donations from different multinational companies but this one is different because it came from the pockets of all employees.

Employees are Radio Frequency Engineers, Accountants, Administrators and Managers who made sure to contribute a portion of their salaries to help even in a small way to the victims of the devastating and biggest typhoon ever recorded in history so far with more than 10,000 casualties in the Philippines alone.

According to Alfred Hoh of Elabram Malaysia, “Our regional offices at Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia are all sending their support and all are sending their prayers to the victims and casualties.”

According to the news, Typhoon Haiyan, known as Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, was an exceptionally powerful tropical cyclone that devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, in November 2013. It is the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing at least 7,000 people in Philippnes alone. Haiyan is also the strongest storm recorded at landfall, and unofficially the fourth strongest typhoon ever recorded in terms of wind speed.

Trend Micro and SM Cyberzone

Trend Micro and SM Cyberzone

Promote Internet Safety among Teens

trend pic

December 2013 – In line with its ongoing advocacy to build a safe online environment for kids and teens, Trend Micro Incorporated, the global leader in online security solutions, partnered with SM Cyberzone to spread awareness on how to safeguard oneself through online safety practices. A series of road shows were held at SM Cyberzones across Metro Manila: SM Marikina, SM Southmall, and SM Sta. Mesa.

The interactive booths reached some thousand young Filipinos who tried their hand at a social media persona quiz, protected their Facebook profiles with the Trend Micro Titanium Privacy Scanner and spoke to Trend Micro volunteers about the importance of maintaining a good online reputation to promote the What’s Your Story contest.

“Knowing the dangers of the Internet gives teens a better appreciation of the need to embrace safer online practices,” shares Myla Pilao, Trend Micro Inc. Director of TrendLabs Marketing Communications. “More and more young people are surfing, communicating, and sharing information on the Internet without knowing the importance of protecting their online reputation. Teens probably don’t realize that what they consider to be regular behavior with friends is actually bad Internet etiquette, that posting what they think is a ‘funny’ photo of themselves might later cause them problems, or that posts about upcoming plans for a family trip out of the country may put their family or home in danger.”
