Trend Micro Forms Asia’s Safe Gaming Alliance

Trend Micro Forms Asia’s Safe Gaming Alliance to Provide Filipinos a Secure Mobile Gaming Experience

Philippines, Manila, July 15, 2014 – With the rapid rise of malicious and high-risk mobile apps in a game-loving nation like the Philippines, Trend Micro gathered mobile game developers from around Asia to set up the Safe Gaming Alliance, signifying its new focus on the mobile gaming industry built upon its deep experience in the mobile and social networking space.

According to a recent online poll conducted by Trend Micro Inc., at least 46 percent of consumers in Philippines have encountered or downloaded fake or risky apps on their mobile devices while 17 percent do not know if their mobile devices are infected with malware or viruses.

As part of its commitment to cybersecurity, Trend Micro, together with game developers, is introducing the first-of-its kind Dr. Safety mobile security app in an effort to create a world safer for mobile gaming which is now available in the rest of the Asia Pacific. Featuring six secure game technologies including a security certified games recommendations feature, the app ensures consumers are downloading legitimate gaming apps for the best possible mobile gaming experience.

Mobile gaming developers forming part of the Safe Gaming Alliance include AppXplore, CreatioSoft, FunPlus, Games Solution Centre – Singapore, Gamiana, Gumi Asia, Monkey Wrench Games, PIGSSS GAMES, Softstar Entertainment and Tuttifrutti Interactive.

“Smartphone penetration in the Philippines continues to grow consistently every year. Along with this growth, we are also seeing an increase in mobile game app downloads. In a country where consumers rely heavily on in-app advertisements for recommendations, it makes it even easier for cybercriminals to target unsuspecting consumers to download malicious apps through mobile advertising. This puts more Filipino at risk of cyberattacks. By working together with the mobile gaming ecosystem, we can offer a trusted and secure platform for Filipinos, sparring them the worry of downloading fake or risky mobile game apps that are pre-loaded with malicious content,” said Terrence Tang, Senior Director of Consumer Business, Asia Pacific, Trend Micro.

Commenting on this partnership, David Ng, Chief Executive Officer, Gumi Asia said: “At Gumi, we believe not only in creating mobile games that players love, but also in giving them the security they need. We are happy to be a member of the Safe Gaming Alliance and to be part of a continuous effort towards a safer gaming environment for all mobile gamers.”

Mobile Gaming Landscape in the Philippines and Beyond

In Asia where mobile and social networking are intricate parts of daily lives, explosive growth of mobile gaming industry is anticipated. According to a report from Dutch-based research firm Newzoo, mobile-games revenue will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 27.3 percent until 2016. The report also cited that the Asia-Pacific region is by far the biggest market for mobile games with 48 percent of global revenue.

In addition, Trend Micro’s recent online poll surveying more than 2,000 respondents from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines confirmed that consumers in Asia have a robust appetite for mobile gaming. Yet, with the extensive usage of mobile phones for gaming, many consumers remain vulnerable to mobile threats. Key findings of the online poll include:

  • Consumers in the Philippines are avid gamers – 85 percent of respondents in the Philippines play mobile games at least once a week, with 53 percent gaming daily. In terms of mobile gaming app downloads, 51 percent of consumers download gaming apps weekly, while 23 percent download gaming apps monthly.
  • While consumers in the Philippines love mobile gaming, many are not willing to spend more than USD$2 on mobile gaming apps – 71 percent of respondents in the Philippines will not pay more than USD$2 per app.
  • Filipino parents are most involved in their children’s mobile gaming habits, ranking first in Southeast Asia – 58 percent of respondents in the Philippines are aware of what their children play on mobile devices and 60 percent of respondents game frequently with family members and friends.
  • Filipinos are receptive towards in-app advertisements and rely on mobile advertisements for recommendations – 68 percent of respondents in the Philippines do not mind in-app advertisements.
  • Existing anti-virus apps do not offer adequate protection – Despite 69 percent of respondents in the Philippines using security or anti-virus app on mobile devices, 46 percent still encountered fake or risky apps.
  • Most consumers in the Philippines do not check if their apps are authentic – Only 24 percent of respondents in the Philippines check their apps following download from the app stores.

clip_image002Mobile Vulnerability Timeline

The number of mobile malware and high-risk apps hit 2 million according to Trend Micro’s first quarter security roundup for 2014. The mobile threat landscape is quickly resembling today’s PC threat landscape wherein vulnerabilities are discovered one after another since June 2013. The Android™ “master key” vulnerability, which affected almost all devices, could make any mobile malware “legitimate.” Shortly after, vulnerabilities in device accessories like SIM cards and fake iPhone® chargers also came to the fore. A platform bug that could also trap a device in an endless reboot loop and another that could leak user data soon followed. Most recently, the Heartbleed vulnerability posed a risk to mobile devices.

It is no secret that cybercriminals are actively repacking popular mobile gaming apps for malicious intent. These apps are not only hosted on malicious sites but even in legitimate app stores. One good example is the recent case of trojanized Flappy Bird, which was repackaged and injected with malicious code and downloaded by countless of unsuspecting users within the first 24 hours following the announcement of the official apps’ withdrawal from the app store.

Trend Micro and SM Cyberzone

Trend Micro and SM Cyberzone

Promote Internet Safety among Teens

trend pic

December 2013 – In line with its ongoing advocacy to build a safe online environment for kids and teens, Trend Micro Incorporated, the global leader in online security solutions, partnered with SM Cyberzone to spread awareness on how to safeguard oneself through online safety practices. A series of road shows were held at SM Cyberzones across Metro Manila: SM Marikina, SM Southmall, and SM Sta. Mesa.

The interactive booths reached some thousand young Filipinos who tried their hand at a social media persona quiz, protected their Facebook profiles with the Trend Micro Titanium Privacy Scanner and spoke to Trend Micro volunteers about the importance of maintaining a good online reputation to promote the What’s Your Story contest.

“Knowing the dangers of the Internet gives teens a better appreciation of the need to embrace safer online practices,” shares Myla Pilao, Trend Micro Inc. Director of TrendLabs Marketing Communications. “More and more young people are surfing, communicating, and sharing information on the Internet without knowing the importance of protecting their online reputation. Teens probably don’t realize that what they consider to be regular behavior with friends is actually bad Internet etiquette, that posting what they think is a ‘funny’ photo of themselves might later cause them problems, or that posts about upcoming plans for a family trip out of the country may put their family or home in danger.”

ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré & Raimund Genes

Trend Micro Partners with United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union to Provide Cybersecurity Support

November 2013 – Trend Micro Inc., a global leader in security software and solutions, announced its partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialized agency for information and communication technologies, in support of its Global Cybersecurity Agenda.

This relationship will better equip ITU’s 193 Member States, as well as more than 700 private-sector entities and academic institutions with the threat expertise and resources to fight cyber threats globally.

Trend Micro and ITU Representatives

ITU will have access to Trend Micro infographics and global threat reports, like the recently published TrendLabs Q3 2013 Security Roundup. According to the report, today’s threats thrive by staying undetected, raising concerns about the ongoing proliferation of Apple iOS phishing sites, as well as the sizable uptick in online banking malware. Monitoring these ongoing and future threat trends will aid organizations in creating strategies to prevent future attacks. Given the recent slate of website defacements and hacking instances in Southeast Asia, ITU stakeholders are now better positioned to safeguard their assets with this information.

The partnership also aims to promote Internet safety and create a safe online environment for children. In support of ITU’s initiatives on Child Online Protection, Trend Micro will continuously provide resources from its Internet and Safety for Kids & Families program.

Through this partnership, Trend Micro establishes its commitment to helping make the world a safe place for exchanging digital information.

Trend Micro Promotes Online Privacy and Security

Trend Micro Promotes Online Privacy and Security with

“What’s Your Story” Video Contest for Young Filipinos

Invites youngsters to participate in creating a safe online environment.

Manila – October 2013 – In line with its ongoing advocacy to keep kids and teens safe online, Trend Micro Incorporated, the leading global security company, today put out a call for young Filipinos from the age of 13 and above to submit video entries designed to inspire others their age to ensure their safety on the Internet. Dubbed ”What’s Your Story?”, the global online competition, this year launched for the first time in APAC, aims to encourage the sharing of online usage experiences among teens and young adults to spread awareness about the dangers that lurk online and how best to safeguard oneself through online safety practices.

In Asia, more and more young people are surfing, communicating, and sharing information on the internet without anawareness for the importance of protecting one’s “online reputation.” Teens probably do not realize that posting what they thought was a “funny” photo of themselves in an unusual situation might later cause them to lose out on a job interview, or consider the position they are placing their family in when they publicize the plans for their upcoming family trip out of the country.

“Trend Micro has been worked to build a safe online environment for Internet users. We have taken the responsibility upon ourselves to deliver the ideas of online security and online reputation to all families and their children, and would like to promote these ideas via multi-media content,” says Jenny Chen, Chief Culture Officer of Trend Micro. Across the globe, Trend Micro works with schools and NGOs to spread greater awareness, resulting in growing participation.

The 2013 “What’s Your Story?” contest encourages the youth to voice out and influence their peers on responsible use of the Internet through originally created videos addressing the theme of “How do I keep a good reputation online and what are the consequences of not doing so?”

“It is our intent that one day all family members, including children and teens, will be able to use the Internet correctly and safely,” she adds.

Trend Micro officially welcomes all Internet users to submit video entries between 30 seconds and 2 minutes long in either the individual (18 years and above) or school category (participants between 13 and 17 years old whose entries must be submitted by a school representative) between November 1 and December 13, 2013 by uploading the entry on the official competition website: http://whatsyourstory.trendmicro.ph.

Two winners from each category will be selected from the field of entries in the Philippines. Both categories will have a Grand Prize winner and a 1st Runner Up entitled to USD 2,000 and USD 600 respectively. The Top 2 entries will represent the Philippines in the Asia-Pacific regional competition where two overall winners will be awarded a grand prize of USD 5,000 each.

For more information on the contest and video entry requirements, visit the official contest website at http://whatsyourstory.trendmicro.ph

Strengthen Social Network Privacy Settings with Trend Micro…

DSC04710

Trend Micro Advises Users:
“Strengthen Social Network Privacy Settings in the
Post Now, Think Later Era”

Manila, Philippines – 2 October 2013 In an age where more and more people post various details of their personal lives online, Trend Micro warns, “everything we do online leaves behind a digital footprint that can lead cyber criminals back.”

In a recent survey[1] commissioned by Trend Micro, the company found out that almost 70% of the survey respondents are very active on social networking sites, accessing social networks at least once a day. These respondents post profile updates every day citing entertainment, current activities and shopping deals as their most shared information on Twitter and Google+. Almost 24% of these respondents actually traded personal information in exchange for discounts, coupons and to have more friends on their profiles and 37% would also give personal information to be able to join lucky draws online.

“Filipinos are highly switched on. However, they should be mindful about strengthening social network privacy settings. Trend Micro urges Filipinos not to be complacent online. Personal information is valuable to cyber criminals, for their own gain, create false identities for criminal use or even leverage your network to target your friends and family,” said Terrence Tang, Senior Director of Consumer Business, APAC Center Sales and Marketing, Trend Micro.

from left to right Mr. Andrew Tan-Product Marketing Manager (Consumer) of Southeast Asia, Ms. Myla Pilao-Director Core Technology of TrendLabs Marketing and  Ms. Adel Ang-Seniour Manager (Consumer) for Singapore and Philippines. And these are the people behind Trend Micro Philippines.

Privacy Scanner identifies privacy loopholes in social network profiles

One of the most important features to be improved in the Trend Micro Titanium 2014 is the Privacy Scanner. Equipped with Web-threat protection that identifies and blocks dangerous links in websites, social networks, emails and instant messaging, Trend Micro Titanium 2014 can detect spam emails containing phishing scams that can trick users into revealing private personal information.

Trend Micro’s robust Privacy Scanner now dramatically simplifies privacy settings on Twitter, Google+, and Facebook – for both Mac and PC. Facebook settings can also now be managed on-the-go via an Android app. It also gives users control over which apps can access biographical data, and who can tag and see photos.

In this ‘post first, think later’ era on social networks, the Privacy Scanner helps ensure that consumers share information only among those they know.

According to the August 2013 AV Comparatives report, Trend Micro Titanium offers the broadest combination of privacy and Web threat protections for Facebook, Google+, and Twitter across PCs and Macs among 31 security products reviewed (Social Network Protection Review, August 2013, AV Comparatives).

Vulnerability Quotient: How vulnerable are you online?

Trend Micro urges for consumers to seek discretion when posting on social networks and diligence in maintaining strong passwords, as ways to safeguard their personal lives.

Trend Micro has launched the Trend Micro Vulnerability Quotient, available at http://bit.ly/TMPHpress– an app on Facebook that helps consumers determine how vulnerable they are online. Through a series of questions measuring consumers’ behavior on social networks and password management, amongst other security issues, a consumer finds out what their Vulnerability Quotient is and just how vulnerable they are to falling victim to cyber threats. An added function allows them to track how they fare among the rest of the population.

Additional features of Trend MicroTM TitaniumTM Maximum Security 2014

“Trend Micro encourages the building of safer digital social cultures, and aims to enable everyone to protect their digital lives,” said Andrew Tan, Product Marketing Manager (Consumer), Southeast Asia, Trend Micro. “More than just ensuring safe surfing habits, solutions like Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security offer consumers all-in-one, all-rounded protection against identity thefts, virus and other online threats automatically, so consumers can enjoy their online experiences safely, with a peace of mind.”
