Promote Internet Safety among Teens

December 2013 – In line with its ongoing advocacy to build a safe online environment for kids and teens, Trend Micro Incorporated, the global leader in online security solutions, partnered with SM Cyberzone to spread awareness on how to safeguard oneself through online safety practices. A series of road shows were held at SM Cyberzones across Metro Manila: SM Marikina, SM Southmall, and SM Sta. Mesa.

The interactive booths reached some thousand young Filipinos who tried their hand at a social media persona quiz, protected their Facebook profiles with the Trend Micro Titanium Privacy Scanner and spoke to Trend Micro volunteers about the importance of maintaining a good online reputation to promote the What’s Your Story contest.

“Knowing the dangers of the Internet gives teens a better appreciation of the need to embrace safer online practices,” shares Myla Pilao, Trend Micro Inc. Director of TrendLabs Marketing Communications. “More and more young people are surfing, communicating, and sharing information on the Internet without knowing the importance of protecting their online reputation. Teens probably don’t realize that what they consider to be regular behavior with friends is actually bad Internet etiquette, that posting what they think is a ‘funny’ photo of themselves might later cause them problems, or that posts about upcoming plans for a family trip out of the country may put their family or home in danger.”

Trend Micro Partners with United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union to Provide Cybersecurity Support

November 2013 – Trend Micro Inc., a global leader in security software and solutions, announced its partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialized agency for information and communication technologies, in support of its Global Cybersecurity Agenda.

This relationship will better equip ITU’s 193 Member States, as well as more than 700 private-sector entities and academic institutions with the threat expertise and resources to fight cyber threats globally.

ITU will have access to Trend Micro infographics and global threat reports, like the recently published TrendLabs Q3 2013 Security Roundup. According to the report, today’s threats thrive by staying undetected, raising concerns about the ongoing proliferation of Apple iOS phishing sites, as well as the sizable uptick in online banking malware. Monitoring these ongoing and future threat trends will aid organizations in creating strategies to prevent future attacks. Given the recent slate of website defacements and hacking instances in Southeast Asia, ITU stakeholders are now better positioned to safeguard their assets with this information.

The partnership also aims to promote Internet safety and create a safe online environment for children. In support of ITU’s initiatives on Child Online Protection, Trend Micro will continuously provide resources from its Internet and Safety for Kids & Families program.

“What’s Your Story” Video Contest for Young Filipinos

Invites youngsters to participate in creating a safe online environment.

Manila – October 2013 – In line with its ongoing advocacy to keep kids and teens safe online, Trend Micro Incorporated, the leading global security company, today put out a call for young Filipinos from the age of 13 and above to submit video entries designed to inspire others their age to ensure their safety on the Internet. Dubbed ”What’s Your Story?”, the global online competition, this year launched for the first time in APAC, aims to encourage the sharing of online usage experiences among teens and young adults to spread awareness about the dangers that lurk online and how best to safeguard oneself through online safety practices.

In Asia, more and more young people are surfing, communicating, and sharing information on the internet without anawareness for the importance of protecting one’s “online reputation.” Teens probably do not realize that posting what they thought was a “funny” photo of themselves in an unusual situation might later cause them to lose out on a job interview, or consider the position they are placing their family in when they publicize the plans for their upcoming family trip out of the country.

“Trend Micro has been worked to build a safe online environment for Internet users. We have taken the responsibility upon ourselves to deliver the ideas of online security and online reputation to all families and their children, and would like to promote these ideas via multi-media content,” says Jenny Chen, Chief Culture Officer of Trend Micro. Across the globe, Trend Micro works with schools and NGOs to spread greater awareness, resulting in growing participation.

The 2013 “What’s Your Story?” contest encourages the youth to voice out and influence their peers on responsible use of the Internet through originally created videos addressing the theme of “How do I keep a good reputation online and what are the consequences of not doing so?”

“It is our intent that one day all family members, including children and teens, will be able to use the Internet correctly and safely,” she adds.

Trend Micro officially welcomes all Internet users to submit video entries between 30 seconds and 2 minutes long in either the individual (18 years and above) or school category (participants between 13 and 17 years old whose entries must be submitted by a school representative) between November 1 and December 13, 2013 by uploading the entry on the official competition website: http://whatsyourstory.trendmicro.ph.

Two winners from each category will be selected from the field of entries in the Philippines. Both categories will have a Grand Prize winner and a 1^st Runner Up entitled to USD 2,000 and USD 600 respectively. The Top 2 entries will represent the Philippines in the Asia-Pacific regional competition where two overall winners will be awarded a grand prize of USD 5,000 each.

Manila, Philippines – 2 October 2013 – In an age where more and more people post various details of their personal lives online, Trend Micro warns, “everything we do online leaves behind a digital footprint that can lead cyber criminals back.”

In a recent survey[1] commissioned by Trend Micro, the company found out that almost 70% of the survey respondents are very active on social networking sites, accessing social networks at least once a day. These respondents post profile updates every day citing entertainment, current activities and shopping deals as their most shared information on Twitter and Google+. Almost 24% of these respondents actually traded personal information in exchange for discounts, coupons and to have more friends on their profiles and 37% would also give personal information to be able to join lucky draws online.

“Filipinos are highly switched on. However, they should be mindful about strengthening social network privacy settings. Trend Micro urges Filipinos not to be complacent online. Privacy Scanner identifies privacy loopholes in social network profiles
