Philips Philippines Winning Contributor…

Illac Angelo Ancellotti Diaz

Winning Contributor, MyShelter Foundation

Innovation that Matters to You Campaign by Philips Philippines

clip_image002Illac Diaz is a former corporate executive who has since gone on to establish several foundations that provide sustainable solutions to societal problems. He is the executive director of MyShelter Foundation, a non-profit organization which has been engaged in improving the lives of many Filipinos through the creation of sustainable solutions for using recycled materials for the building of clinics and classrooms in rural areas.

MyShelter Foundation, was conceived when Illac observed the shortage of classrooms in the provinces while trying to help solve the housing problem in the province of Negros Occidental, the sugar growing capital of the Philippines. By utilizing the endless supply of waste plastic soda bottles at the municipal landfill and local labor, money could be kept within the community and spent on building more cost-effective classrooms.  MyShelter Foundation then set up a construction business building upcycled schools, clinics, and community centers.  These savings in construction costs could then be channeled by the community to increase teachers’ wages and bring computer technology to schools. Currently, one of the global successes on up-cycling has been the Liter of Light project using a used soda bottle, some bleach, and contact cement to make a cheap DIY daylight through the roof of low income communities around the world

Diaz is a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School and finished previously the program Special Program in Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He was recognized as one of the Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum, Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World by the Jaycees International, and is an Ernst and Young Innovation Entrepreneur of the Year. He has returned to the Philippines to apply and disseminate his research in needy communities throughout the country.

About MyShelter Foundation (MSF)

When Typhoon Ondoy hit the Philippines in 2008, it was one of the worst storms on record. This calamity flooded 80% of Manila, leaving many people with no access to basic needs. Working with emergency and humanitarian disaster relief agencies, Diaz launched MSF to design creative solutions to address the needs of those affected by natural disasters. MSF’s mission is to bring sustainable building solutions that are easily replicable, scalable, and locally sourced to the grassroots level, reframing the way people think about solutions to climate change, not as a product of industrialized nations but as a gift that developing countries can share with the rest of the world.

About Liter of Light

MSF’s Liter of Light redesigns solar lighting for the developing world. The simple, two-step solar lighting technology creates local jobs, teaches green skills, and empowers local communities. Liter of (Day) Light is a DIY affordable system that allows the sun’s rays into homes, schools, and public centers. Using recycled plastic soda bottles, 10 milliliters of bleach, and distilled water, the bottle is placed through galvanized steel sheet roofs common to many developing countries. Sunlight refracts through the bottle and bends to light the space below with 55 watts of brightness, saving an average of US $10 in electricity bills a month and 200 kilos of carbon a year. About Project Yolanda: The ITMTY Campaign by Philips in the Philippines

After witnessing the massive destruction caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) in the Visayas region, Philips decided to refocus its ‘Meaningful Innovations’ program to define and deliver meaningful innovations to affected communities in the Visayas through idea generation and sharing. The outcome of the Philips Innovations campaign will result in a meaningful and sustainable project that will focus on three core issues facing the Visayas today: the need for sustainable infrastructure for displaced families, immediate access to quality healthcare services, and addressing health and nutrition-related concerns.

About The First Meaningful Innovation by Philips in the Philippines:

The Solar Night Light Project by Illac Diaz (MyShelter Foundation)

After careful deliberation and accounting 30% from the public votes, Philips and its partners finally selected the Solar Night Light Project by Illac Diaz as the very first Philips ‘Meaningful Innovation’ to be delivered in Tacloban and Ilo-Ilo.

clip_image004My Shelter Foundation’s (MSF) Liter of Light project is a two-step, DIY solar lighting project that makes use of recycled plastic soda bottles and a simple circuit board built from readily available parts. MSF will work with Philips on technical improvements to benefit locally displaced Filipino families. Priority areas for deploying the solar night lights will be Tacloban and Ilo-Ilo where bunkhouses were built by the government to serve as temporary homes to more than 200 displaced families.

Philips will be implementing the winning idea within 2014 by working in close coordination with the team of Diaz. The process of testing and piloting the Solar Night Light prototype will start immediately and this prototype is expected to be sampled and appraised for the next six months.

Philips Philippines brings its very first

Meaningful Innovation to the Visayas

“Innovations that matter to You” program creates an improved solar lighting solution

with Illac Diaz to light up homes in Tacloban and Ilo-Ilo

Manila, 2014 – Philips Electronics and Lighting Inc. in the Philippines is set to bring to life the very first meaningful innovation with the winning idea by Illac Diaz, geared towards lighting up Yolanda-stricken communities in the Visayas. With over 120 years of innovation heritage, Philips is focused on improving people’s lives through meaningful innovations.

The awarding ceremony held on 25th March 2014 brought together the finalists of the ‘Meaningful Innovations’ program and its select panel of experts – World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board Mr. Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, Department of Health Assistant Secretary Enrique Tayag and Director for National Center for Health Promotion Dr. Ivanhoe Escartin, and ICANSERVE Foundation Founding President Ms. Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala – who announced the grand winner side-by-side with Philips local executives. From 1,057 entries received, streamlined to the top five entries, Philips and its panel of experts have found a winning idea in Illac Diaz’s Solar Night Light Project, based on its impact, innovativeness, relevance, and feasibility.

“We are glad that thousands of Filipinos showed support for their countrymen by sharing ideas on how innovation can make a difference in the lives of those affected by typhoon Yolanda,” shared Philips Philippines Country Manager Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno. When asked about the process to determine the final winning innovation among the shortlisted ideas, Fabia said Philips with WWF-Philippines, DOH, and ICANSERVE Foundation, went through a series of consultations and fine-tuning with the contributors to determine the winning idea. “All top 5 finalists had great ideas and we wished to be able to implement them all. We had to carefully look into the technical feasibility of each single project with the panelists, technical experts, coupled with the results from the public votes. The team of Illac Diaz had the most feasible idea where Philips expertise can help MyShelter Foundation (MSF) to improve the concept design and together, we can deploy the first range of night lights. It is a project that can revolutionize access to lighting in areas where there are limited or no access to lighting at all. It is more than a product concept – it is a sustainable way of bringing light to off-grid areas in the Philippines.”

Philips and Diaz gave the members of the press a closer look at this innovation, sharing how having lights is critical in helping families in the Visayas on their road to recovery. “Each solar bottle light saves 200 kilos of carbon emissions by preventing burning of fossil fuels that is commonly used by power plants to generate electricity,” shared Diaz. “MSF’s Liter of Light project is a two-step, DIY solar lighting project that makes use of recycled plastic soda bottles and a simple circuit board built from readily available parts. MSF will work with Philips on technical improvements to benefit locally displaced Filipino families.”

Philips and Diaz said during the discussion that priority areas for deploying the solar night lights will be Tacloban and Ilo-Ilo where bunkhouses were built by the government to serve as temporary homes to more than 13,000 displaced families. Both parties shared that they are looking forward to lighting up disaster-hit areas with this new powerful partnership. “We intend to inspire an army of people willing to bring light to affected communities, and Philips and MyShelter Foundation hope to serve as catalysts for this movement,” shared Fabia.

As the ‘Meaningful Innovations’ campaign enters its delivery phase, Philips will be implementing the winning idea within 2014 by working in close coordination with the team of Diaz. The process of testing and piloting the Solar Night Light prototype will start immediately and this prototype is expected to be sampled and appraised for the next six months.

“Imagine how big the impact of night lights is in these bunkhouses they now consider their homes,” said Fabia. “We’re not just lighting up homes – we’re providing hope to more families for starting anew.”
