German Medical Technology Experts…

German Medical Technology Experts to Visit Philippines

Less than a month after the successful visit of President Aquino to Europe, a delegation of medical technology experts from Bavaria, Germany will arrive in the Philippines to engage in healthcare discussions and to present their innovative products and services to potential partners in the country.

Composed of seven companies, the “Bavarian Business Delegation – Medical Technology” will hold a conference and networking event at the Hyatt Regency Hotel & Casino in Manila on Oct. 7. The event is co-organized by Bayern International and the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI).

The arrival of the German business delegation reaffirms the continued growth in the bilateral ties between Germany and the Philippines and highlights the important role that chambers of commerce play. Such role was recognized by President Aquino in a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during the former’s visit to Germany.

Following the joint press conference, Philippine Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo and Uwe Beckmeyer, Parliamentary State Secretary in the German Economics Ministry had a ceremonial exchange of notes which laid the foundation for the establishment of the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The formal exchange will take place in Manila.

President Aquino said he sees enhanced trade and investments especially among the German Mittelstand (SMEs) with the formal establishment of GPCCI. Most of the Bavarian delegation are Mittelstand.

With a strong foothold in the healthcare industry, Bavaria is considered a leading medical technology region in the world. Majority of medical technology products and devices in Germany and even around the globe are sourced from Bavaria, which hosts flagship companies and renowned research facilities in the medical field.

“The Philippines has an opportunity to become the healthcare gateway of Southeast Asia, with assets that are appealing to international companies. The conference and networking event will provide a significant groundwork between Germany and the Philippines to forge wider and deeper global ties, stimulating growth in the medical technology industry. We hope this will promote an ongoing conversation that will result in new opportunities for companies on both countries,” said Nadine Fund, GPCCI General Manager.

The seven companies from Bavaria included in the delegation are: EDV-Agentur, Funeralia

GmbH, medi GmbH & Co. KG, Medin – Medical Innovations GmbH, MIPM Mammendorfer Institut für Physik und Medizin GmbH, MMM Münchner Medizin Mechanik GmbH, and Shams X-Ray and Medical Equipment.

These companies offer a suite of products and services that can enable healthcare and medical technology companies in the Philippines to initiate or expand their market sales. The delegation’s portfolio includes electronic data processing, stainless steel medical furniture, medical aids especially of medical compression technology, nCPAP products in non-invasive therapy for premature babies, newborns and pediatric, MRI compatible devices, sterile processing systems, and X-ray technology.

During the event, the delegation will engage in strategic business-to-business discussions with participants to explore areas of common interest.

“The visit of such a delegation – composed of executives from medical technology companies in Bavaria – is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for local players in the Philippines. The delegation is composed of experts in their fields and we hope Philippine companies will take advantage of their presence,” Fund said.

To find out more about the event, contact GPCCI at (02) 519-8110 loc 819 or thru gpcci@gpcci.org.

Facebook offers more details…

Facebook offers more details on its internet-beaming planes

We’ve known about Facebook’s ambitious plans to bring internet to developing areas via drone for a while now. At the Social Good Summit this week, Facebook Connectivity Lab’s Yael Maguire revealed more details about what the social network is hoping to accomplish. Speaking with Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore, Maguire said that the UAVs would need to be able to fly for months, or even years, at an altitude “above the weather, above all airspace.” For those counting, that’s around 60,000 to 90,000 feet. Luckily for Facebook and the Internet.org initiative, it has already looked into solar-powered options that can make trips lasting up to five years. Maguire went on to say that a regular-sized drone won’t suffice, so the “planes” will have to be “roughly the size of a commercial aircraft, like a 747.” As you might expect, the effort is certain to face regulatory hurdles, including how many of the vehicles a single pilot can oversee. Eventually, the goal is to have one person steering “up to 100” of the internet-carrying planes at a time. “We can’t have one person per plane if we want to figure out how to connect the world,” Maguire explained. For now, there’s a three to five year window for employing the UAVs, and the lab hopes to see the first one take flight for testing next year.

Samsung’s no-phone-necessary Gear

Samsung’s no-phone-necessary Gear S watch is coming to the US this fall

Samsung gave us a glimpse at its next smartwatch (there have been a few) during IFA, and tonight there’s news that, surprise, you’ll be able to buy and use the Gear S in the US this fall. This one is special because unlike most other watches, it can connect to 3G data by itself when the wearer’s phone isn’t around. There’s little in the way of details, but it’s coming on all four major carriers — AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile — and the company promises more information “soon.” You can check out our experiences at typing out emails on its two-inch AMOLED screen right here, and decide if it’s worth picking up this Tizen OS device instead of the Apple Watch (or any of the other wearables either coming soon or already here).

Ironman Smartwatch…

Timex’s new Ironman smartwatch does data without a smartphone

Timex just added a new entry to its Ironman line of GPS watches, ‘cept it’s not just any ole timepiece this time — it’s a 3G-connected smartwatch that doesn’t even need to pair up with a phone. The company calls it the Ironman One GPS+, and while it may have features commonly found in a smartwatch, it was made mostly for athletes like its predecessors. It has the capability to upload your run data to a fitness website with one tap, for instance, and you can even assign contacts to monitor your run in real time. One version also comes with a heart monitor a la Samsung Gear Fit and a chest strap, but unlike the ordinary one that costs $399 (which is already steep, as other smartwatches today cost around $200), it’ll set you back $450.

Other than these health-focused features, the One GPS+ also has a built-in messaging app where friends can contact you through a special email address. And, in case of an emergency, there’s an SOS button you can press that alerts friends and family with your location. The ruggedized watch (designed to be water resistant for up to 150 feet) comes with 4GB of storage for music, which can only be heard through a Bluetooth headset. Its battery can last up to 8 hours with the GPS on, and up to three days without. These capabilities might be enough for people who don’t want to be inundated with notifications on their wrists, but those who yearn for more may want to look at alternatives (like Android Wear devices) instead.

Timex’s answer to the LG G Watch, Pebble and HP Gilt, among many other smartwatches out there, was made in partnership with AT&T and Qualcomm, with the former providing free 3G access for a year. Timex didn’t say how much the mobile internet service will cost after that. Qualcomm, on the other hand, will supply the the chipset, the Brew platform and the low-power 1.5-inch Mirasol display that it showcased a year ago through the Toq smartwatch. The company doesn’t exactly have a shipping date in mind yet, but you can already pre-order the One GPS+ through Timex’s website.

Samsung’s new cable

Samsung’s new cable can charge your watch using your phone

samsungcablelead

Battery life is one of the most important elements of any mobile device — it can make or break it, in some cases. And while the majority of Samsung products aren’t known to be terrible at that, a little help never hurts. As such, the South Korean outfit recently introduced its Power Sharing Cable, which, as the name suggests, allows you to use it to transmit energy from one Galaxy device to another, like a Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch, respectively. Better yet though, Samsung’s peripheral isn’t limited to its own handsets, slates or wearables, with the company claiming that the Power Sharing Cable is friendly with “any device” that can be charged by way of micro-USB. Meanwhile, the companion app lets you select just how much power you’re willing to share from the main source, making the process simple to monitor. The Power Sharing Cable is available now for $20, which seems like a small price to pay for something that could be very handy in times of need.
